Xiaomi’s Secret Plan to Become the Next Apple Inc

Xiaomi appears to be going all in this year as it is prepping to introduce a new smartphone, a smartwatch, and a novel mobile processor. The Chinese tech giant is expanding its product offerings to battle industry leaders like Apple and Qualcomm, while at the same time, nourishing its ecosystem in developing markets.
The Xiaomi Mi smartwatch has lately been the subject of speculation. Now it is finally on its way to becoming a reality; the launch plans will be formally announced at a company event on May 10. A local publication reported on a conference in Beijing where Liu De, vice president and co-founder, talked about the smartwear coming in the latter half of 2016.
The news comes after CEO Huang Wang of Huami, Xiaomi-backed smartwear manufacturer, talked about the Mi smartwatch and a fitness tracking device releasing soon. While Xiaomi is yet to officially announce plans for Mi, it recently unveiled the Mi Bunny — a smartwatch priced under $50 for children. Thus, it’s not too hard to believe that a bigger and adult-centered Mi smartwatch is also in the works.
Smartwatch has been a considerably successful product across the globe. The Apple Watch has had an amazing first year – Wall Street estimated total sales brought in over $6 billion in revenue for Apple – but is apparently now losing its groove. Similarly, according to Strategy Analytics, Apple’s share in the smartwatch market has dropped from 63% last year to 52% in first quarter 2016. In the same period, the global smartwatch market grew threefold from 1.3 million to 4.2 million total units sold.
Now reports have surfaced that Apple is working to regain its grip on the global smartwear industry, as it is about to introduce the Apple Watch 2. While the Apple product will be more successful in developed western markets, the Xiaomi Mi could pose a significant threat in emerging markets.
At the May 10 event, Xiaomi is also planning to introduce its own line of mobile processors, dubbed Rifle. This could give room to the brand getting rid of third-party suppliers.
The new Xiaomi smartphone, called the Mi 5, will release in India on May 4 and is aimed at emerging smartphone markets. The company has not discussed any plans to release the new device in North American and European markets as of now. This could possibly be because developed markets are saturating and the only room for growth in the smartphone sector is in developing countries. Aside from mainland, India is one of the first markets to get the product.
Xiaomi’s Mi 5 flagship product will be made available in the world’s two largest populations soon with 20,000 mAh power banks available without registrations on the company’s website. The device was unveiled at an event in New Delhi recently and is priced at around $350 — $50 cheaper than the latest low-end smartphone from Apple, the iPhone SE or Special Edition.
The Mi 5 is a high-end flagship offering and comes boxed inside a pretty case with a curved aluminum trim. With 3GB RAM, the smartphone inherits a lot from the Mi Note series and is available in two storage variants i.e. 32 and 64GB. It houses a large 5.15-inch screen with 428 ppi pixel density and full HD display. The smartphone is powered by the popular Qualcomm chipset, Snapdragon 820, integrated with the Kyro cores arranged in a quad-core format. It has a fingerprint scanner on the front, while the Adreno 530 GPU will processing graphics this time.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 sports high-quality cameras on both sides. The rear or main camera has a 16 megapixel Sony IMX298 camera sensor with LED flash and phase detection autofocus (PDAF) while the selfie camera has a 4 megapixel 2-micron sensor. Both cameras have an f/2.0 aperture each. It houses a 3000 mAh battery and the NFC technology used in mobile payment services; similar to how the Apple Pay works. The device includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/ac, VoLTE support, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G connectivity, and GLONASS.
